Tennessee Section

The Institute of Transportation Engineers recognizes outstanding members at three levels: Section, District, and International. The Tennessee Section of ITE currently honors members in four categories. Click on an award to learn more about its purpose and past recipients.

  • This recognition is given to a TSITE member who has demonstrated outstanding service to the profession and to ITE at the State and District levels. Established in 1975, this award recognizes the recent achievements of members over the past few years.

  • This recognition is given to a TSITE member who has contributed both to the advancement of the transportation profession and to ITE at the Section and district levels. Established in 1975, this high award is only presented to a member active in the profession for more than 10 years and who has exhibited outstanding service above and beyond the normal duties of their position over a number of years.

     

    Edward (Ed) E. Watt served as Tennessee Division ITE President in 1983, Southern Section ITE Section Representative in 1984-85, and Southern Section ITE President in 1987/88. Ed was the last Southern Section ITE President before their name change to Southern District ITE. Ed received the Tennessee Section ITE Volunteer Award for Distinguished Service in 1990 and the Southern Section ITE Herman J. Hoose Distinguished Service Award in 1992. Ed was awarded ITE Fellow membership grade in 1981. Throughout his professional career, Ed volunteered his time serving on many committees for both Tennessee Section ITE and Southern District ITE.

  • Since 2002, the Jack B. Humphreys Award for Service as a Young Member is presented to a Tennessee Section member under the age of 35 who, over the past year, has contributed outstandingly to the advancement of the transportation profession at both the Tennessee Section ITE and Southern District ITE levels. From the inception, this Award was created and named the “Jack B. Humphreys Award for Service as a Young Member ". 

     

    Dr. Jack B. Humphreys has been actively involved in ITE beginning in 1965. Jack served as Tennessee Division ITE President in 1972/73 and Southern Section ITE Section Representative in 1977/78-1978/79. Jack received the Tennessee Section ITE Volunteer Award for Distinguished Service in 1998 and was awarded ITE Fellow membership grade. Throughout his professional career, Jack volunteered his time on many other committees for both Tennessee Section ITE and Southern District ITE. Jack taught and mentored many Tennessee Section ITE members through the years while he was a professor at the University of Tennessee.

  • This recognition is given to one of the four ITE student chapters in the state of Tennessee who, for the school year, has contributed outstandingly to the advancement of the transportation profession in the Tennessee Section. Established in 2003, this award recognizes the recent achievements of chapters and encourages more participation with the Southern District.

     

    Dr. Robert E. (Bob) Stammer, Jr. has been actively involved in ITE beginning in 1972. Bob received the Southern Section ITE Best Technical Paper Award in 1983. Bob served as the Tennessee Section ITE Section Representative to the Southern District ITE in 1990-91, the Southern District ITE President in 1997, the International Director to ITE from Southern District ITE in 2009-11, the Chairman of the International ITE Expert Witness Council, the International ITE Traffic Engineering Council, the International ITE Safety Council, and the Southern District ITE Historian. Bob received the Southern District ITE Herman J. Hoose Distinguished Service Award in 2008 and the Tennessee Section ITE Edward E. Watt Volunteer Award for Distinguished Service in 2010. Bob was co-chair of the 2000 International ITE Annual Meeting held in Nashville and awarded ITE Fellow membership grade. Throughout his professional career, Bob volunteered his time on many other committees for both Tennessee Section ITE and Southern District ITE. Bob taught and mentored many Tennessee Section ITE members through the years while he was a professor at Vanderbilt University.
